We bought out first house about four years ago, and Isaiah Tibbs was our realtor. I cannot recommend Isaiah enough. He was fantastic. We were not necessarily even looking for a house at the time, but a friend of ours had told us of a house in her neighborhood that had just come on the market and put us in touch with Isaiah (a personal friend of hers) to arrange a showing. Isaiah graciously agreed to show us the house, a lovely place in Wilshire Wood (where we now live). Although we were only dipping our toes in the water and approaching this as just a one-off visit, Isaiah took us under his wing and helped guide us through the broader process of thinking about buying a house. He arranged to show us some other houses around town for comparison so we could understand what the market in Austin looked like and what kinds of deals you might find around different parts of town, which helped us think about what our needs might be with a baby coming and what counted as a real value and how to look past superficialities and see the real worth of a home. We liked the Wilshire Wood house enough to put down a bid, and Isaiah worked hard for us to get it, though that deal ultimately didn't work out. But Isaiah's dedication really shone through, and he kept working with us until another (better) house in Wilshire Wood came up and Isaiah did a magnificent job of helping us get a successful bid, nailing the winning bid price down almost perfectly. He helped us get a good lender, worked hard to address potential maintenance issues in the house, and got us everything we wanted from the seller during the negotiation process. We moved in a few months later and are living there still.
I'll highlight a few things about Isaiah that make him an excellent realtor. First, he knows his stuff. He was not going to let us buy a house just to get a sale --- he wants his clients to get a good deal and buy a house that has real potential and is worth what you pay for it, and his knowledge of the particulars of the Austin market is impressive. More importantly, he is willing to educate you on how to make wise decisions on your own. I learned a lot from Isaiah, and it clearly was an important part of his approach to make sure his clients made their own very informed decisions. Second, he's not afraid to tell you what he thinks in sometimes brutally honest terms, and his unmitigated, direct feedback proved vital in our own decision making. Third, though, he is also a good listener. I remember in particular one house we visited in Northwest Hills that was in many ways a really fantastic deal but the amount of remodeling involved was just beyond what we were willing to tolerate, a constraint on our situation we didn't even realize ourselves until we saw that house. Rather than pushing us to go for it or blowing our concerns off, Isaiah listened to our feedback carefully and you could actually see in his eyes and face a deeper thoughtfulness that emerged in how to direct our search going forward. Fourth, he will fight for you. He got a lot for us on the deal we finally got, and he wasn't willing to compromise on the things that were important to us. Finally, Isaiah really cares about real estate, and I think this comes from a very personal place. At one point I asked Isaiah why he got into real estate and he told me a very honest and personal story about his parents selling their beautiful Victorian home some years ago that inspired him to open his eyes to what a house and a home really are to people. This stuff means a lot to him and it's in his blood.
I recommend Isaiah greatly. He'll fight for you and help you find the best home you can, no matter what.

As a first time home buyer, I had no idea what to expect on every level. Which neighborhood? Move-in ready or fixer-upper? What would provide the best value? How much to spend? How do mortgages work?
Isaiah not only gave us a crash course over the course of a few weeks, but helped us manage expectations and kept us organized so we could find a home by the time our first child was born. We ended up closing our home three weeks before my daughter was born.
We moved into a home that worked for our family--close to UT, all one story, good bones that would allow for a strong foundation for renovations, huge yard, lots of square footage, and, not to mention great neighbors.
During the process, Isaiah fought for us all the way. For example, we ended up in what could potentially have been a bidding war with another family, but Isaiah helped us figure out a price that would ward off a potential bidding war while working within our budget. Though it didn't feel like it at the time, when we look at comps and other metrics, we got a total deal on our home. After inspecting the home, Isaiah also helped us negotiate our bid price down so we could address issues with the HVAC system immediately.
Other realtors will talk to you, then send you a database of MLS postings that match your square footage and pricing criteria. Then they make you do the work to select homes from viewing listings and pictures online. When you seem interested in a home, you ping them and tell them you want to see a home. It's a really passive process.
Isaiah worked hard to figure out our tastes and needs. He actively sought to show us homes so we could make the cost tradeoffs we needed. With my busy work schedule and the stress of third-trimester pregnancy, the last thing I wanted to do was sit and view MLS postings all day. In the end, we settled on the home we wanted without having to view a hundred homes. I couldn't have asked for a smoother first time home-buying experience. Thank you, Isaiah, for everything!
